A Study on the Symmetry of Occlusal Contacts of the Patients with Temporomandibular Joint Disorders
Song Mee-Ryoung

Kang Dong-Wan
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the percentage difference in occlusal contacts betweenleft and right side as a possiblc occlusal predisposing factor on the pathogenesis of temporomandibular joint disorders.
A total of 20 patients with temporomandibular joint disorders were selected as the experimental group and 20 normal subjects without temporomandibular joint disorders were selected as the control group. These experimental group were divided into
two
groups(is, 11 mild and 9 moderate patients) based on Helkimo¡¯s index.
A computer aided image method for the analysis of occlusal contacts is used. The symmetry, the distribution and the intensity of the bilateral occlusal contacts on silicone rubber bites(Bite Checker(r), GC) in habitual maximal intercuspal
position
were
investigated.
@ES The following results were obtained:
@EN 1. Conserning the percentage difference between left and right molar occlusal contacts, there was no statistically significant difference between the normal and the mild group. However, statistically significant difference was found between
the
normal and the moderate group(P<0.05). Similar results were obtained between the mild and the moderate group(P<0.05).
2. With respect to the percentage difference between left and right posterior occlusal contacts, there was no statistically significant difference between the normal and the mild group. However, statistically significant difference were obtained
between the normal and the moderate group(P<0.05), and between the mild and the moderate group(P<0.05).
3. In the percentage difference between left and right side in total occlusal contacts, the normal and the mild group were not statistically significant difference. However, statistically significant difference were obtained between the normal
and
the
moderate group(P<0.05), and between the mild and the moderate group(P<0.05).
